Authentic Pilgrim Shell from Galicia
The scallop shell is the most iconic symbol for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago.
Every pilgrim carries a shell on their backpack, and most get their authentic scallop shell before starting their journey. This is a real Atlantic scallop shell (Pecten maximus). It consists of two halves — the lower one is fairly flat, the upper one more curved, and it is this curved half that pilgrims traditionally wear.
Sizes
- Small: approx. 8 cm in diameter
- Large: approx. 12 cm in diameter
As a natural product, every shell is unique — colour, shape, size and markings may vary slightly.
Wearing the shell marks you as a pilgrim. Whether you’re walking the Camino for weeks or just hiking a few hours along one of the smaller routes in Europe, the shell brings recognition, support, and conversation. People see the symbol and understand your journey — and you’ll be surprised how often it opens doors and hearts along the way.
