Authentic Pilgrim Shell

The scallop shell is the most iconic symbol for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago.

Every pilgrim carries a shell on their backpack, and most get their authentic scallop shell before starting their journey. The Atlantic scallop shell (Pecten maximus) measures around 8 to 14 cm and consists of two halves — the upper half is more curved and is the one worn by pilgrims.

Wearing the shell marks you as a pilgrim.
